“The colours and textures of Maastricht” - The best of hand knitting and machine knitting in one summer knitting week.
The summer knitting week is a party that we organize together with Loret Karman of the Amsterdamse Steek. An inspiring summer knitting week completely focused on knitting colour and textures.
We take you on a trip through the city of Maastricht, to hidden places that make this historic city so colourful. We promise you an energetic week full of creativity, new techniques, insights and ideas!
During the excursions we will show you the colours and textures of the city. We will teach you to look in a different way. What you see will be translated into knitting stitches, textures and colours. You will document your research by means of photos, materials, colour and knits.
You will learn all about hand and machine knitting and the effect of colours on your knitting, according to four Maastricht themes.
When and WhereMonday 11 to Friday 15 August 2025Our daily base is the STRIKKS studio in Maastricht.
An educational and inspiring summer knitting weekWe work daily from 10:00 to 17:00 We start with an excursion in the city. Under the guidance of Loret, Maartje or a guide, you will capture the surroundings while walking and knitting.
During the excursions you will learn all kinds of specific hand knitting stitches to capture the colours and textures of the city of Maastricht in knitted samples.
The excursions last about 1.5 hours and then we return to our base. There you will work out the ideas you come up with. There are all kinds of knitting yarns, knitting machines and colouring materials available for you to make your knitted samples. You can work out your inspiration in hand-knit samples, but there are also knitting machines available to help you quickly. In the afternoons, the workshops are more focused on knitting machine techniques. You are free to participate in these or to continue working on the ideas from the other workshops.
On Wednesday evening we will have dinner together!
Hand knitting and machine knitting
This summer knitting week is for everyone who is looking for an inspiring knitting week. Experienced and inexperienced knitters are welcome. Designers, artist, hobby makers alike. You do not need much prior knowledge; if you can hand knit (cast on and off, knit and purl) this week is perfect for you. No knowledge of machine knitting is required, because we will teach you a number of basic techniques. But if you can already do that, that is a bonus and you can quickly continue.
And even if you are already a star in knitting, you can be inspired by the possibilities that the city of Maastricht offers you to find a different view on the knitting technique.
The excursions are walks in the city or very close by. We regularly knit while sitting, but you must be able to take a city walk.
